Finally, 2019: The Year of the Linux Desktop

Soon enough, the French Academy rose to the occasion, and published its opinion on this version of French which doesn't exclude women and nonbinary people by design.

They described it as a "mortal peril".

I'm not joking, this is a real quote from its official declaration. Including women and nonbinary people in your spelling puts the French language in "mortal peril".

I absolutely hate how gendered French is, it's literally impossible to talk about someone without gendering them and it sucks

When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,

"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes

I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."

I love that literally the DAY OF Tumblr hittin the shits Twitter decides that its newest fun thing is "Jack Dorsey sent an envelope of his beard hair to Azealia Banks so she could craft an amulet to protect Dorsey from ISIS". Tumblr's communal curse needed a new host

[opening the Mastodon translation tool] Ah yes, We Blate

#Dreamwidth have expressed interest in implementing #ActivityPub, and are asking for detailed information on how to do that. Any suggestions for links to give them?

Instance is synonymous with server, and I think using the word "instance" was a bit of a mistake on my part during early Mastodon development. It's a programming term that less people are familiar with from other contexts. I suggest using "server" in your UIs

"It says here you have experience with federated social networking software. Can you show me an example?"
"It's spelled Mastodon, with an O."
"You're hired."

"Welcome to Magic School. Here is your schedule."
"Thanks! But..."
"This is just 'Ethics' and 'Human rights' and things like that."
"Correct, that's the first year curriculum."
"Do we have to learn all this?"
"Of course! What do you think this is, software engineering?"

honestly though, mastodon instances are run and moderated by real people who care about the network, to the point of often paying their own money out-of-pocket to run their instances.

the *one* time i've had to report a post, my instance admin messaged me directly to let me know the action taken about it.

don't be shy to report. it works here. the rules aren't there just to keep things advertiser-friendly.

welcome to mastodon. don't be a dick. hug your local mods/admins.

As a note to our new tumblr friends, the fediverse is a primarily volunteer-run thing with the admins paying for all the server costs out of their own pockets

If you'd like to chip in towards keeping the fediverse running then most admins have patreon or kofi links somewhere that you can throw a couple of bucks at from time to time

One thing Tumblr has that most other platforms don't is the mix of social media interactions and customizable blog themes. I kinda wish someone would do a similar thing, hopefully even federated because centralized infrastructures are just plain too expensive to run, but unfortunately I don't really have nearly enough coding experience to even begin to do that myself.

Tumblr is banning all adult content

Highlight from their definition of adult content: "female-presenting nipples"

At some point, the NPM community will have to reckon with the fact that they've painted themselves into a corner with a design which makes long-term maintenance really expensive.

Huh, Mastodon is actually really usable on mobile browser. I should have expected that, but I'm too used to commercial social media sites actively breaking functionality to get people to use their app.
